🟦 August Christensen (Incumbent)

Intro:
Hi, my name is August Christensen and I am running again for mayor of Driggs. I have lived in this area since 1988, raised my family here, and served as mayor for the past eight years. I’ve been involved with the Driggs Urban Renewal Agency and served as Planning & Zoning chair for several years. My familiarity with local issues and our staff gives me strength in this role.

Q: What do you think are the City’s strengths?
The City’s strengths lie with our dedicated, qualified and friendly staff. They are highly professional and ensure Driggs remains compliant with Idaho law. They also represent Driggs well at the state level.

Q: What can be improved?
We must ensure our policies and procedures align with Idaho State Statute and that local and municipal know-how are followed. This keeps Driggs running efficiently and protects taxpayer dollars.

Q: What are the roles and responsibilities of a mayor?
Listening and helping residents and businesses, keeping long-term goals in mind, representing the people of Driggs locally, regionally, and statewide.

Q: Growth is a constant topic of conversation. What is your opinion toward growth and how should the city be involved?
Smart planning is important to keep our community balanced. We need to create spaces where people can live, work, and recreate while protecting our small-town identity. Growth must be managed carefully to maintain our quality of life.

Q: What would be your three objectives if re-elected?

  1. Housing: Support affordable housing for Teton Valley workers (Gemstone, Wayland Roasters site on 5th & Ski Hill Road).

  2. Infrastructure: Continue work on wastewater, water, and road projects to accommodate growth responsibly.

  3. Fiscal responsibility: Keep utility costs low and ensure the Wastewater Treatment Plant project continues smoothly.

Q: What do you think are the City’s strengths?
Driggs has a strong community identity and people who care deeply about each other. When something happens, whether celebration or challenge, we show up for one another. That unity is the backbone of Driggs and why I love this town.

Q: What can be improved?
Community engagement and education. Many residents don’t know about upcoming decisions until they’re already made. I’d like to see more transparency, proactive outreach, and accessible communication.

Q: What are the roles and responsibilities of a mayor?
To represent the city honestly, uphold laws and ethical standards, and ensure that decisions are made transparently. A mayor must listen to residents, collaborate with the council, and advocate effectively for the community.

Q: Growth is a constant topic of conversation. What is your opinion toward growth and how should the city be involved?
Growth is inevitable. We must balance it by prioritizing affordable housing, sustainable infrastructure, and maintaining small-town character. I believe in careful planning and making sure the city’s regulations actually support what residents want.

Q: What would be your three objectives if elected?

  1. Housing: Implement housing strategies that benefit residents, not just developers.

  2. Transparency: Make meetings, budgets, and projects easier to understand and access.

  3. Sustainability: Strengthen infrastructure and environmental planning to keep Driggs livable for future generations.
